Chicago is looking to borrow $25 million to purchase 600 new police cars over the next two years.
The Chicago City Council's Finance Committee is expected to consider the $25 million in borrowing for the new squad cars at its meeting Friday.
The police cars are for the 970 new officers the Chicago Police Department plans to hire. CPD officials say the department will hire 516 patrol officers, 92 field-training officers, 200 detectives, 112 sergeants and 50 lieutenants over the next two years. The mayor is expected to detail how the $134 million police hiring plan will be financed when he releases his 2017 budget plan.
