In the Republican State Leadership Committee's (RSLC) latest round of 16 races to watch in 2016, Illinois' 71st House district made the cut.
The list, which was released Wednesday, focused on "outstanding new women and diverse candidates running for state-level office this year. " Illinois GOP candidate Tony McCombie is challenging Democratic incumbent Mike Smiddy of Hillside for a state House seat and was included on RSLC's list.
"For three cycles now, the RSLC's Future Majority Project and Right Women, Right Now initiatives have pursued more inclusive governing that better reflects the full depth and diversity of our great nation," said RSLC President Matt Water. "With so much at stake this November, we are thrilled to highlight today 16 races filled with outstanding conservative candidates running to improve their states and communities in the government closest to home. We look forward to their final weeks of campaigning as they continue broadening the reach of our party by reaching new voters around the country with their positive visions for how to make people's lives better. We are proud to support them."
McCombie is mayor of Savanna, Illinois and has received backing from the Liberty Principles PAC and other major Republican donors. Meanwhile, Smiddy, who is seeking a third term, has labor support.
